Wine Affaire

Wowee. Had a real enjoyable wine appreciation class at Wine Affaire (www.wineaffaire.com) yesterday evening.

The mini lecture started a little abruptly and dry but as the info started sinking in, the brain tells you knowing more about how wine is made does enhance the experience of drinking wine. Gosh, never knew there's a wine making technique called 'noble rot' that involves situating your vineyard near a body of water and enabling the unique alternate wet and dry weather to "cure" the grapes and leave them sugar laden. That's how those expensive sweet wines are made!

Can't imagine the number of things that can go wrong in this precise but unpredictable process. What if the mists don't come? It can also rain for several days, then how? Growing crops is tough.

Also learnt about why red wine, white wine and sparkling wine glasses are made the way they are. Hint - they are designed according to how your tongue works! Really! There is a freakin reason for everything and that makes the Virgo in me appreciate how anal these wine people can be. From the grapes, to the $1000 barrels, glass bottles, different stopper designs, storage, glasses and decanters, it's like a parallel wine universe of micromanagement that I never knew of. Cooooool.

Thanks Adrian for the lovely recommendations, wine blend, yummy hibicus champagne and fruit cheese! We'll be back for the big bash in May so watch out!
